Jon Stancer, Singer-Songwriter, makes a rare appearance at Hugh’s Room Live on Thursday, March 22 to showcase his recently released and critically lauded album, For The Birds. This is his first live performance in many years and his first ever at Hugh’s Room Live.
A veteran vocalist and guitarist within Toronto’s alternative music scene, Stancer has performed and toured with the eclectic and acclaimed singer-songwriter, John Southworth, and was a prominent presence on Southworth’s celebrated debut album, Mars Pennsylvania. Stancer also co-produced and contributed several songs to the one-off album, Saloon, by songwriting / studio collaborative, Family Ritual, which spawned several tracks licensed for film and TV productions by HBO, Disney, The USA Network, the CBC and others. With For The Birds, Stancer, a staunch Brian Wilson admirer, has created a cohesive, multi-layered pop record. Produced by the great Jono Grant, the result is a collection of lush and lavish, hook-laden rock ‘n’ pop connected by lyrical themes that touch on reclusiveness and resurgence, regret, revision and rejuvenation. The album features a multitude of instruments, sounds and opulent arrangements ‘worthy of L.A.'s legendary Wrecking Crew of the '60s’. “I love many different types of music," Stancer says, “and I tend to incorporate all of them in what I do.” Standout tracks, Dance In The Sun, and Now That Summer Is Gone, have been in consistent rotation on Sirius/XM Radio’s CBC 3 channel since the album’s release, with the official music video for Dance In The Sun approaching 11.5K views on YouTube.
For the Hugh’s Room concert, Stancer will be backed by a full band, including Grant and guitarists, Tim Bovaconti and Ronnie Beals, and will draw on material from his current release as well as his back catalogue… and possibly include a few choice covers as well.
